Legion of Mary

What is the Legion of Mary?

The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholics serving under Mary, our Mother and Queen. It was founded in Ireland in 1921 by Frank Duff and it has been in Castlewellan since 1952. It is the largest organisation of lay people involved in Apostolic works in the Catholic Church with over three million active members worldwide.

What does the Legion of Mary do?

The objective of the Legion of Mary is the sanctification of its members by prayer and active apostolic work in union with Mary. Members work in close cooperation with the Holy Spirit to renew the face of the earth through prayer and service in evangelising and performing works of mercy as Jesus commanded.

Who can join the Legion of Mary?

The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics over the age of 18.

Membership

Active members meet weekly to pray the Rosary and Legion prayers, to plan and discuss active works, and to receive spiritual formation. The meeting should last no more than one and a half hours. At the weekly meeting, members are assigned two hours of service in union with Our Lady and the Holy Spirit’s help.

Auxiliary members pray the Rosary and prayers of the Legion of Mary for the intentions of the Blessed Virgin and support the efforts of the active members through their prayers.

Works and projects

We visit the homes in the parish pastoral community to promote Mass, Confession, Adoration, the recitation of the Rosary and Divine Mercy chaplet and the Miraculous Medal. We also carry out Street Contact work.
