Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

In January 1973, Pope Paul VI introduced this ministry with the instructions Immensae Caritatis which, among other things, permitted lay men and women to assist in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass, and also, to take Communion to the sick and housebound in parish communities.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion serves the Church on a rota basis by assisting the priest in the distribution of Communion at weekday and Sunday Masses. Holy Communion is brought by the Ministers to the sick and housebound in the parish, including those in nursing homes.

Sick calls

An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion is a specially trained layperson who brings Holy Communion to those who are homebound, ill or in hospital. This is a way to extend the love and community of the Church to members who cannot attend Mass. These ministers are selected by the parish priest and are responsible for a respectful and reverent delivery of the Eucharist.

An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion may:

  • Bring communion
    • They bring the consecrated hosts from a Sunday or weekday Mass to sick or homebound individuals.
  • Lead a service
    • They can lead a prayer service that includes readings, prayers and the distribution of Holy Communion for those who are unable to attend Mass.
  • Visit care facilities
    • They often visit nearby hospitals and care homes to provide Holy Communion and fellowship to residents.
  • Act as a sign of the community
    • By their service, they represent the whole community, showing concern and support for the sick and homebound members.

How the visit works

  • The service
    • They follow the prescribed rite, which includes a greeting, a penitential rite, scripture, intercessions and the distribution of Holy Communion.
  • Reverence
    • They are expected to maintain a reverent demeanour throughout the visit, as they are carrying the Blessed Sacrament.
