Saint Malachy’s Church, Castlewellan

History of our church

Saint Malachy’s Church Castlewellan was built in the 1880s on the site of an older church. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Patrick Dorrian of Down and Connor in July 1880. The church was dedicated on 7 May 1884 by the Very Reverend V.P. Hood.

The £15,000 for the church’s construction was raised locally. The church was constructed using Ballymagreehan granite and local labour. Farmers from neighbouring parishes helped out by drawing stones, sand and timber in their carts to the site.
